Noodler's Ahab Flex Fountain Pen - Arizona

The Ahab flex pen was introduced in late 2011 and is currently Noodler's largest and most popular fountain pen. It features a steel flexible #6 nib and a slide piston mechanism. If you'd like, you can even remove the piston mechanism and use the pen as an eyedropper for a massive 6ml ink capacity. The Ahab is made of a celluloid derivative and is technically biodegradable and formed from a "renewable resource". The vegetal resin body of this pen may show particles or striations within the material. This is most noticeable in demonstrators and bright colors.

The Noodler's flex pens were designed for the hands-on tinkerer - they are made to be taken apart and adjusted. The nib and feed pull right out and can be adjusted and heat set for optimal performance. Don't be afraid to get a little ink on your fingers while you learn how to use this pen.

As a simple rule of thumb for writing with a flex pen, just apply slight pressure on your downstrokes, which will spread the tines and increase the line width, achieving that optimal line variation. Make sure to go slowly so that the ink can keep up with your writing. As with any flex pen, it just takes practice!

Due to the residual machining oils used when cutting the feeds for these pens, we highly encourage you to give the pen a good flush before use. We recommend any of the following options: distilled water, water with a touch of dish soap, a pre-packaged pen flush, or a solution of 10% clear ammonia to water. This should resolve most ink flow issues!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thar she doesn't blow, The Ahab rocks This is really a review for the three Noodler's Ahab flex pens I have as they only differ in their colour scheme.I love these pens, though I've found because they write wet I do end up with ink on my fingers. As yet I've only used them with different diamine inks and they write smoothly considering they're steel nibbed, not quite as flexible as my vintage swans but they still allow a "personality" to come through in the writing and as they're relatively cheap I don't worry quite so much about the possibility of loosing them. The only sadness is that they're not sold this side of the pond as the postage increases the price dramatically. Overall a pure and unalloyed delight

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Go-to-Pen I've been toting my Ahab in my bag for quick notes, as well as using it daily at my desk for over a week now and can report it is a delightfully responsive writing instrument! I was a bit reluctant to deviate from my usual Broad nib choice but discovered immediately that my often disjointed and print/cursive style of handwriting was the perfect match for this flex nib. I've had no skipped letters, no missing loops or blobs of ink that can often occur with conventional, fixed-width nibs. I love the look and feel of this pen and would recommend it to anyone who writes by hand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Pens This was my first Ahab I have since bought 2 others after getting this one tuned into my liking with a Goulet nib as I didn't care for the nib that came with it. Now as I bought 3 of these and I wanted to set all 3 of them up identically you would think they would all perform the same, right well eventually yes after some tinkering. I strongly recommend taking these apart and flushing them before use regardless of what nib you use and flush very well! Also Brian has some tips in his videos on setting the nib that are very useful. If you like tinkering a little these are good versatile pens, if you want a pen that will work great out of the box you may want to look at other options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it I have had no experience with tuning a nib--nearly all of my fountain pens are high-end ones that I've received as gifts from my husband (I'd rather have fountain pens than diamonds!). So I was a bit apprehensive about what I'd have to do to get this pen writing well. To my surprise and delight, it was perfect, right out of the box. I inked it with J. Herbin Rouge Hematite, and quickly filled a page with writing. When barely pressed at all, I get a nice fine line, and then with varying amounts of pressure, that great thick line from the flex. No skipping, no problem! Am I lucky or what?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting, pretty, and cheap! For a fountain pen around $20, it was very good. I spent quite a bit of time just playing and doodling with the flex feature with Private Reserve Shoreline Gold. It's my favorite ink color and I was looking for a better pen to house it in then my Lamy safari and calligraphy pens. My only issue was my fingers keep sliding into the feed; I tend to hold my pens close to the tip. Looking at other Noodler pens, I decided to try a Konrad as it has finger stop which is what I need. I'll keep using it, but I need a finger stop for a daily use pen. I have no idea what everyone is talking about as far as the smell goes; it's close to a bar of cheap hotel soap if you stick it up to your nose. Nice shipping too by the way : )

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blammo! I'm thoroughly enjoying this fountain pen. I'm not an artist so I don't take advantage of the flex capabilities, but I do write with it often and it suits my needs excellently. It's smooth and for regular writing the piston's capacity is great. It feels and looks good in the hand. I'm well pleased with the Ahab.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Arizona Ahab I pretty new to fountain pens, but I decided I really wanted this pen for my collection. I love the look and feel of it in my hand. I am still trying to find the sweet spot when writing with it (again I am new to FPs). It puts out a lot ink and the line variation is amazing. This will be my favorite pen once my handwriting gets a little better, or until I buy another one in a different color. Don't hesitate to buy this pen!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from noodlers ahab flex pen arizona I have enjoyed my ahab flex pen since day one. I love the ability to convert it to a eye dropper since I write a lot. just make sure you clean the pen when you first get it and you will get writing enjoyment out of it. I would put this pen up against any other pen in the under $100.00 category . being self employed the price fits my budget well.
