J. Herbin Lie de The (30ml Bottled Ink) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 93.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous Ink I chose this ink to try because I'm generally fond of brown and sepia coloured inks and this one had rave reviews - for good reason. This is a nice wet ink that flows well and shades very nicely when using a broad nib. It's easy to clean and, even on cheap paper, doesn't tend to feather or bleed-through, though there is some shade-through. No water resistance. Overall, I'd highly recommend this ink to anyone, but I do think that the 100ml bottle is the far better value. Also, the 30 ml bottle, while nice looking, is impractical since it becomes difficult to fill without tipping the bottle after using a surprisingly small amount.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful colors I recently bought two bottles of J.Herbin from Mr. Goulet: Rouge Bourgogne and Lie de The. I really liked the rouge from the outset (in a Lamy Al-Star F nib). Not much shading--just a really deep purpley-red. I didn't like the Lie de The' as much at first (Mont Blanc Meisterstuck F nib). There's a lot of shading, but the lighter parts look sort of like, well, tea stains. However, I just put this ink into a Pelikan 205 F nib---which is a lot more flexible and puts out way more ink than the MB---and this ink looks really nice. The darker portions are a really rich, cocoa brown, and the lighter parts don't look nearly as washed out. Both inks flow very well and there haven't been any problems with clean up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The shading, oh the shading... I print rather than write cursive, and all that extra contact with the paper makes all the difference to the over-the-top shading this ink has, with each stroke getting tiny dabs of additional ink. On Tomoe River, this ink lays down crisp edges and smooth shading gradations from tan to deep chocolate, and is just wickedly gorgeous to behold. It seems well behaved on cheap copy paper, with negligible feathering, but saturation seems to go up and shading is less impressive, tending to stay in the range of chocolate rather than the tan-to-chocolate with better FP-friendly paper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from buy it. just buy it. oh how i love this ink. it is thus far the only ink that i truly love in my Visconti Opera Elements. i put it in that and it just blows my mind. amazing shading, beautiful colour over all, smooth, well saturated, just a darn good ink. if you don't yet own this ink you are doing yourself a disservice. it is especially nice in very wet pens. drys in a reasonable time frame and looks bloody marvelous. have i mentioned yet that i like it?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing everyday brown... What a wonderful ink (I took a hint from SBRE Brown's Inkcyclopedia). Its understated, slightly cool tone makes it a good everyday ink. Flow (ever so slightly on the wet side) and saturation are great, but the shading that comes about in cooperation with my L2k'smedium nib is simply incredible - from light onion skin all the way to a deep liquorice in one letter - phenomenal! (as was Goulet Pen Co.'s service - thanks! My younger daughter had great fun wrestling with your invincible shrink wrap...)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just like Stephen said... Lie de The was one of the first inks I learned about thru SBRE Brown's YouTube video reviews. Now there is seldom a time when I don't see a spent, wet tea bag and think of this ink. The exact same shade of brown. This ink is a bit on the dry side so I have to use it in wet pens. Very nice shading potential with more flexible nibs. Recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deep Brown I like this ink. It is a well behaved, rich brown. It is dark enough to not look yellow or greenish, but just a hint of shading to not look too black. I will buy this ink again.
