INK SAMPLE - J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor (1670 Anniversary Ink)

J. Herbin is said to have kept an emerald in his pocket during his voyages as a good luck charm. These precious gemstones have been treasured for centuries as protective talismans. One of the purest emerald deposits in the world, the Chivor mine was discovered in the middle of the16th century by Spanish conquistadors.

Chivor emeralds were much in demand, and the emperors and royalty of India, Turkey and Persia sought the New World treasures once the gems arrived in Europe. Emeralds were enormously popular with the Mughal Court, whose emperors referred to them as “Tears of the Moon” because of their opaque transparency.

This beautiful emerald green blue ink contains a red sheen with gold flecks throughout, enhancing your writing with an elegance and beauty that is unmatched by other inks. Each 50ml bottle is hand dipped in sealing wax with a stamped “1670” seal on the front and individually packaged in a collector edition box.

This is a 2ml sample of J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial. The volume of ink is enough to fill a couple of converters and get 10-20 pages of full-page writing for you to get a really good idea of what it's like.

INK SAMPLE - J. Herbin Emerald of Chivor (1670 Anniversary Ink) is rated 4.375 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow... Fine tip TWSBI mini. The blue-green is so rich and luxurious. It makes up for the fact that I think my sample came off the top of a bottle that wasn't mixed up too good first. No real visible gold flecks to speak of in my sample, not even settled at the bottom of the vial, but I did manage to get a red sheen by letting a drop of it run down my paper. I don't even care though, this is my new favorite color...with or without the gold flecks. If I could find the same color without the sparkles for cheaper, I'd probably go with that as my daily writer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's got the glitter I read all the controversy about the emerald ink and so bought a sample rather than a bottle. Even before I read all the reviews, I was pretty sure that the early pictures were lighted and written in ways that I, as a normal human being, would never be able to duplicate so I was not dismayed at all then I tried out the ink in my own pens, under my own lighting. It works in my Lamy fine. It works in my Lamy broad. It works with my folded pen. No, I can't really get the red thing to happen. I wasn't expecting it to happen. The green's a lovely color and it does sparkle! So I'm going to buy a bottle!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Festive I purchased this sample out of curiousity and am glad that I did. I have it in a Kaweco Italic nib 1.5 and it performs so well. Quick and reliable startups, good but not excessive flow. Beautiful teal color with added sparkles. Indeed, I would be happy to use the ink without the sparkles. On the down side, I do not think I would trust this in a pen whose nib assembly cannot be taken apart for cleaning. I can easily imagine the sparkles settling in the feed over time. Otherwise, it works really well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great ink, but high maintenance I have tried this ink in a Creeper and a Pilot Metro, fine nib. It can write beautifully in both. I was surprised to get such a beautiful gold sheen out of my fine Metro . . . but the next day I had to clean it out of the Metro because the gold was too much for it and it wouldn't write. It is much better suited for a flex pen like the creeper, but you won't see much of the red sheen unless you use Tomoe River paper. The red comes out beautifully on Tomoe, but barely on any other paper. That was about what I was expecting for this ink. The emerald color of the ink is beautiful, though, even in a fine nib without as much glitter showing. It's almost more blue than green. I would advise not keeping it in a fine or dry writing pen long term. But as long as your go in knowing that it's a bit high maintenance, this is a fun ink.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun Little Ink I bought this ink on a whim just to try out something a little more unique and I'm a fan! The blue colour itself is very nice, and there are a lot of gold particles that are pretty clearly visible. Unfortunately I haven't seen any hints of red like the picture shows- I'm not sure if that's just the sample I got or if the nib I'm using is too fine, but I'm using a Lamy 1.1 mm stub which lays down a pretty solid line. Just because of this, it doesn't get full stars. Overall, I wouldn't make this an everyday writing ink, but for something adventurous that can be used for cards or notes it's a very interesting and fun ink!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better in a wide tip I purchased this for my husband as part of a gift. He used it in an extra fine tipped pen. I think you lose the beauty of this ink in a fine line. As for the ink itself: it does take a while to dry and isn't very water resitistant, which didn't work for him. However he says the color is nice and changes over time. It starts out light and darkens as it dries.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fine Ink I picked up a bottle of this ink because I was curious about the shading properties. Sadly I don't have nice enough paper to make the ink work correctly, on cheap copy paper it looks like a very nice deep blue green. I think with the right paper and perhaps a wetter pen I would get some of the red sheen this ink is known for. If I find a paper that makes this ink work the way it's shown in photos and in reviews I'll update this review with the details.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful colour Great look and colour. I didn't see a large colour variation as the swatch shows. The variation are more subtle but very noticeable. The looks is classic and expensive.
