From Field Notes:

We hope these memo books will inspire you to spend some time gazing into a fire this summer. It’s ridiculously satisfying to collect some wood, carefully build it into an attractive structure, then watch the dramatic light show as it burns away into smoke and ash, leaving no trace.

Our inspiration comes from everywhere and anywhere, but “Campfire” started with an actual campfire. Steve, Matt, and Bryan set out one afternoon to northern Illinois to build, film, and photograph the process of building, enjoying, and extinguishing a campfire.

Matt’s family has a summer house on Long Lake that made a great location for our shoot. His grandparents bought the family land, which was originally used as resort, and built the house there. Matt’s parents, Jim and Chris, welcomed us as we set out to collect some flagstones and dig a fire pit along the lake shore, filming, and photographing the process.

Back in Chicago, we had great photos and footage, but still needed to do a bunch of tests to determine the plan for the notebooks. We tried a whole bunch of variations, as always, inspired by our collection of vintage notebooks, and also various Boy Scout handbooks, merit badge guides and other ephemera. We eventually decided on a technique common before process color separations made color printing easy: a photographic halftone printed over blocks of solid spot-colors to simulate a color photo. In this case, each book is printed with five different spot colors, the darkest color being the photographic halftone. Three stages of the fire are represented on the three covers, “Dusk,” “Night,” and “Dawn,” and Aaron Draplin came up with a series of logos, “Geometry,” “Community,” and “Responsibility,” for the backs. They’re printed on a coated-one-side paperboard (coated outside, uncoated inside) with a satin varnish applied to protect the finish.

The body pages are white Finch Opaque 60#T ruled with our 3/16" graph, each featuring a different ink color matched to the inside cover. The books are bound with gold staple wire.

With at least three ex-Scouts here at Field Notes Midwest HQ, we feel any night spent around a fire in the woods, should be rewarded with a patch. So, we created a handsome 2-1/4" one inspired by (but larger than) merit badges, and our friends at Brewery Outfitters in PDX stitched ’em up. There's one included with every 3-Pack. We hope you'll wear yours, and that our Summer 2017 Field Notes come in handy as you become a true Campfire Master.

Field Notes Notebooks - Campfire, Summer 2017 Edition, 3-Pack (3.5 x 5.5) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for pocket notebooks, commonplace books, etc. To be completely honest, I bought this more because of the patch (an iron-on, but you can sew it too, if you prefer) and the cover design than because I needed still more notebooks pocket notebooks. I used these as vade mecums, commonplace books, general note taking while out and about, etc. They are small, but for what I use them for they are just the right size. They easily fit into a shirt or pants pocket and they are not so thick as to be uncomfortable in either place. The paper is good, but not great, for fountain pen use. If you use a fine or extra fine nib you can get away with a wet ink, but if you prefer a medium, stub, or broad nib you'll want to stick to the drier inks, or use only one side of each page. For example, I use Lexington Grey with an EF nib all the time and it never bleeds through, but if I use that same ink with a medium nib I can't write on the opposite side of the page. That said, I have yet to see bleed-through that wet the page behind the one I was writing on. I have not seen any feathering with any ink (I've used about four brands in seven colors so far) but if you write with a wet ink it can take a blotter to dry properly before turning the page (or a small amount of patience) Ink does not appear to sit onto of the paper, but wet inks have spotted the opposing page for me once or twice when I was in a hurry. I have not seen any accidental smearing, but I'm usually not using a wide nib when I write in small notebooks like this. The construction of all Field Notes notebooks that I have ever used (a fair few) has always been good and I've never had loose pages or damaged covers. They can take quite a beating and hold up well, which is why I like this brand. The covers of other popular brands in this size have not held up as well in my experience and I no longer use them because of that. The inside of the front cover has pre-printed form where you can write your name, some other information about location, when you began and ended this particular journal/notebook, and whether or not you offer a reward for its return if lost. The body pages are "white Finch Opaque 60#T ruled with 3/16" graph, each featuring a different ink color matched to the inside cover" and are bound with gold staple wire. These don't come with lined or blank pages as this is a limited edition version, but you can get other cover designs with those types of pages. Lastly, the patch that comes with this limited edition set (you get three notebooks, each in a different color ink, and one patch) is well made, with good embroidery and a neat design. Often with iron-on patches I find that I have to do a little touch up with colored ink to tidy up the embroidery, but with this patch I didn't have to touch up a thing. It's an iron-on patch and it goes on like any other iron-on (search for iron-on instructions on the Interweb - it's easy!) but you can sew it on too, if you prefer. I may get one more set of these before they are gone (the limited editions may or may not be around for a while, depending on popularity) just because I like the patch ;)
