The Daruma is a type of Japanese doll which is modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. There is a legend surrounding Bodhidharma referred to as “Menpeki Kunen” (Nine Years Facing the Wall). This legend states that Bodhidharma, through sheer indomitable willpower, was able to maintain a meditative state facing the wall for a period of nine years.

The Daruma doll serves as a physical representation of Bodhidharma's unyielding willpower. It has the ability to rise no matter how many attempts are made to knock it over. Due to its resilient nature, the Daruma embodies the Japanese proverb Nana Korobi Ya Oki (fall seven, rise eight) and is seen as a good luck charm in Japan for those who have challenging goals that they are determined to bring to fruition.

“Me Ire-Daruma” (Daruma in which eyes are inserted) is a tradition that began in the Edo Period and continues today. Owners of the Daruma doll “without eyes” can draw a single eye onto their doll as they begin their journey toward their goal. This is known as “Kai Gen” (Opening the Eye). The second eye is drawn in when the goal is achieved, and this is referred to as “Man-Gan” (Full Wish).

The stunning Namiki Yukari Daruma fountain pen features a range of vibrant colors. The brilliant red, has become the most common color for Daruma dolls, and signifies protection from evil spirits. Here is the explanation of the meaning of the five vibrant Daruma doll colors featured on the barrel and cap of this exceptional fountain pen:

Yellow: Monetary fortune, Fame, Good luck
Blue: Success, Independence, Promotion
Red: Family Safety, Victories, Good luck
Green: Health, unlocking one's potential, Increasing athletic potential
Black: Protection against bad luck and natural disasters, economic surplus.

“Daruma” is the physical manifestation of patience and willpower. Namiki hopes that these 800 limited edition fountain pens bring the core Daruma attributes to their owner. Inspiring the resilience to weather challenges and the commitment to bring their dreams to fruition. The artists who have crafted these pens by hand are part of the “Kokokai” which is a group of exceptionally trained Maki-e artisans. The pen has an exquisite 18k gold nib in size #10, fills via cartridge/converter (a CON-70 is included), and comes packaged in a wooden box with a leather pen wrap.

As these pens are truly one-of-a-kind pieces of art, they are warrantied for life by Namiki.

Please allow us up to several extra days for shipping of this pen. Please also note we are unable to accept a return of this pen for any reason once it has been used with ink, or if the included ink bottle itself has been opened. Please thoroughly inspect and dry test the pen before use.
