This orange Diplomat Aero fountain pen features a Zeppelin-inspired anodized aluminum body with groove-like depressions on the barrel and cap. It has a satisfying soft sliding click cap that posts securely onto the barrel when writing. It features a smooth writing #6 JoWo stainless steel nib, a dark grey grip and trim, and fills via standard international cartridge/converter (both are included).

This pen features a custom nib grind by Gena Salorino of Custom Nib Studio, into a medium cursive italic. It’s slightly more crisp than your typical stub, for a more distinct line variation. But the corners of the tip are ground smooth so it feels nice on the page.

Note: The converter you receive may vary from what is pictured here.

Medium Cursive Italic

This is my new favorite nib. More rounded than a stub and makes for beautiful line variation. Sadly I think I bought the last one unless Goulet decides to order more custom nib grinds from Gina Sailorino.

Crisp Writer

This has been a surprising pen in many ways. I had been considering an Esterbrook with the Journal nib but called customer care to see what other options there were for custom nib grinds and this pen came up in the conversation. Based on the stats I wasn't sure I would like it. I'm generally not a fan of metal sections and it seemed like it would be heavier than I prefer. But the writing samples in the photos and in the nib nook won me over and I'm glad they did. The coating on the section softens and warms it to the touch and adds just enough texture so that it does not slip in the hand. I can be acutely aware of any sharp edges on a pen including threads and this long-ish section with no threads is one of my most comfortable pens. But the same sensitivity makes posting the pen a less appealing option as the edge of the cap sits in an uncomfortable place in my hand. I think if not for this I would prefer it posted to add just a bit of length but posted or unposted it has a nice balance to it and feels lighter than the stats would have suggested. I love the crispness of the line that the nib puts down and I feel that it helps make my writing more clear. It did take me some time to get used to the cursive italic as it is a little more finicky to writing angle, but well worth the effort. Also I prefer pens on the wetter end of things and this was on the dry side with the first ink I tried (Sailor Christmas Tea). I very gently worked on the nib to create more flow but didn't want to take it any further. Changing to Diamine Forest Green was a good choice for me and I feel the flow is good now. On a final note, I like bouncy nibs and this doesn't fit that bill but I still really enjoy writing with this pen and I'm eager to explore more custom nib options. Many thanks to Brian K. in customer care for helping me with this purchase.

I was a skeptic, but now I'm a believer!

Diplomat Aerowho? What? It is a heavy pen by most standards, but I ordered the pen because it had Gena Salorino's Custom Grind (medium Cursive Italic). The pen is well balanced and comfortable to use, even on longer writing sessions. I do not post so I can not comment on that. Now for the best partthe nib. The custom grind from Gena Solorino is amazing. It's butter smooth and a true pleasure to use. The Aero has perfect ink flow to make this lefies writing experience a dream! I wish more pen manufacturers worked with Nibmeisers to make custom grinds more readily available. Thank you Goulet Pen's for offering exclusive grinds from two of the best Nibmeisters out there!!

Best Nib Ever.

I received this pen as a gift. I like wet pens, but not too bold nibs. Stubs once in awhile. I like springy. I like line variation. I write a LOT, so I prefer pens that are a little larger in the grip, they are easier on my hands. This pen and nib combo is perfection. So well made. So well balanced. The nib is ground so well. It's like ice skating across the paper. For comparision, prior to using this pen, my favorites were Pilot E95 S M, Pilot VP F, TWSBI Vac 700R F. Still love those pens, but I'm reaching for this one first.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B
