The TWSBI Diamond 580ALR comes with a benchmark piston ink-filling mechanism and has all detachable parts. The clear demonstrator barrel allows you to see your ink color and remaining ink level. This special edition fountain pen has a deep teal blue aluminum grip section, cap ring, and piston knob. The aluminum is enhanced with a subtle matte finish, with circular engravings in the grip and cap area. It comes with a stainless steel nib and is presented in a modern clear display case.

The idea behind the TWSBI Diamond 580 was to go back to basics and capture the simplicity and elegance of traditional writing instruments. In recent years, the development and modernization of writing instruments has resulted in traditional writing instruments, such as fountain pens, falling into obscurity. It was TWSBI's goal to bring the past back to life by creating a traditional fountain pen that even modern day society can appreciate.

The TWSBI Diamond 580 is a classic fountain pen with a piston ink-filling system. By fusing the traditional mechanisms of the fountain pen with a modern industrial design, TWSBI has created an eye-catching fountain pen that is simultaneously appreciative of the past and relevant in the present.

TWSBI's belief is that it is important to allow the user to disassemble and reassemble the pen and completely experience the traditional aspects of owning and using a fountain pen. These pens also come packaged with a wrench and silicone grease. Neither of these accessories are intended to be used immediately, as they are for long-term care and maintenance. Additionally, please use extra care if you choose to disassemble the nib and feed, as the feed is very fragile.

You may notice a white substance on your 580AL or 580ALR pistons. This is bearing grease, and must not be removed during cleanings, or replaced by silicone grease.

Brilliant writer

The Diamond 580ALR is a brilliant pen. Nice grip section, good balance, wonderful ink capacity, brilliant writer. Goulet is my favorite pen and stationary online store. Wonderful service.

Looks and feels nice, writes very smoothly.

I'm a huge fan of TWSBI and I bought this one as a little treat to celebrate the completion of a huge project.

This one looks beautiful and feels great in the hand. And the nib lays down a nice amount of ink (I like it a bit on the wetter side) while staying very smooth. As a piston filler it holds a good amount of ink, so I have to fiddle around with my travel ink well a lot less.

By the way, Goulet pens had my little gift in my hands super fast.

Love the 1.1 Stub Nib

I used to use Lamy Safari (m) for my daily pen long ago. Recently I wanted to get back into using fountain pens daily but wanted to change things up and not use reloaded cartridges. This pen is very smooth, and I enjoy writing with it. The only complaint I have is sometimes the nib goes dry on me between uses. I use this each day and carry it in my shirt pocket with a small 3" pad. And it can get frustrating when I need to make a quick note, and it takes me a couple minutes to get it the ink to start flowing. I don't know if this is common with all fountain pens or not. But once it is flowing, it stays smooth. I love the 1.1 stub nib, but I recently ordered a fine nib to practice and improve my handwriting.

I love this pen!

This pen writes better for me than my Echo. I appreciate that I can switch nibs. Once I fill this up all the way, it will be my main pen for journaling and planning.
I received my order promptly and began using this right away. I filled it and it wrote smoothly from the very first stroke. It’s so consistent. Beautiful pen; couldn’t be happier.

Excellent Pen/Wrong Owner/Learned a Lot

After seeing lots of positive videos/reviews, I thought this was going to be my "up-scale" purchase, but wish I'd seen the ones about the machined, concentric grooves at the smallish grip, the longer grip on the ECO, and the rabbit hole that can open up when reassembling the pen. All turned out to be issues for me and large hands, but that's on me. The pen clearly works for the majority and I can see why. For tinkerers, the Goulet reassembly video might be a must-watch before disassembling the pen. I'm in the tinkerer category but missed that reassembly one. Due-diligence failure on my part? I accept so this is not a critique, but the info might be helpful. I still can't get the screw to click at the right place/moment and am in the dreaded loose-end-cap "gotcha." The connector and screw bolt are aluminum and can scratch the inside of the barrel if inexpertly fiddled with too much. That's me. It isn't noticeable without looking for it, but it wasn't right to return it as far as I was concerned. I also learned demonstrators aren't for me unless I keep the barrel filled with the ink color. Very cool then.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B
