Clairefontaine Basics
Clairefontaine Basic Clothbound Notebook - Black, Lined (5.83 x 8.27) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 220.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from reasonable notebook for reasonable price I was originally a Moleskine fan... and then I discovered Rhodia. Unfortunately, I go through them quickly enough that paying $20 a pop was getting a little strenuous, so I've been experimenting with similar products. The paper in the Clairefontaine notebook is, of course, fabulous. It lays reasonably flat when I'm writing (with a little spine-bending effort on my part) and while it lacks the built-in folder in the back, the notebook has a similar setup to a Moleskine or Webbie. It's not my favorite, but if you go through a lot of journals/notebooks and want great paper quality, it's definitely a great choice. I would probably buy one again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well... ...nothing else to say than... it's Clairefontaine! Paper of extreme smoothness, can take any ink I have. Two small issues with this notebook (issues that don't deserve to take away a star): 1- The elastic band is held by metal "clip" things that create tiny bumps, which is quite uncomfortable when writing on the right side. What I did: removed the elastic band from the clips, passed it through the holes in the back cover, and tied both ends. Problem solved! 2- It doesn't open completely flat. Not much you can do about it, but it's not a big issue. Otherwise, very sturdy notebook, super useful, will most certainly get another one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clariefontain 5.875 x 8.25 As mentioned in my review for larger notebook, I really like the quality of the paper for use with the fountain pens. The pens seem to glide across rather that scratch or grab at the paper. I really like this size as a personal journal, writing down stories that I hope someday my grandchildren will be interested in reading. I am using the dip fountain pen with a medium to fine nib and experimenting with the various inks I get with the Ink Drop Program (a different color for each story). So far have not found any inks that don?t work well with this paper and I really don?t expect to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Far from basic. This is Clairefontaine paper at a bargain price. I discovered these notebooks at Goulet after a diligent search to find a journal refill that was a specific odd size for a well-worn leather cover. These notebooks are that exact size and at a great price. (I remove the elastic on the ones I use with covers and add them back later when they are archived). Very study and lighter weight to carry around than the hardcover journals like Moleskine. The paper, amazing. I believe that Clairfontaine and Rhodia are the same paper in different weights. This one I believe is 90 lb. I have found that medium and larger nibs appeal to me more on this paper. So far the Diamine and Noodler inks work great (Majestic blue doesn't smear as bad as everyone seems to indicate).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from notebook of extremes This is my first Clairefontaine notebook. It's an example of two extremes. The paper is great. It's very smooth, and works well with all my pens and ink -- no feathering or bleed through. The white color shows off the ink colors very nicely. Paper rating alone would give it 5 stars. ... However, there is a deal breaker for me, and that's the binding. The cloth binding seems durable enough. But the book will not lay flat for writing. In fact, I feel like I'm wresting with the book to write, as it seems to want to close, or at least flip pages. ... If you can live with the tendency to close, the notebook is very nice based on the paper quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wonderful writing (and buying!) experience I purchased the green clothbound notebook and have really enjoyed the way my fountain pen glides over the legendary Clairefontaine paper. I have the older non-elastic band journals, and I love them! The elastic band would just make them better. Buying from GouletPens was a great experience - personal letter from Brian, with a wax seal! My kids liked that part. GouletPen has the best price on these journals, too, so you might as well stop the comparison shopping and click Buy. enjoy!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great paper but should have gone with spiral bound I bought this to replace a spiral bound Black n' Red of similar size for use at work. The Clarifontaine paper is smooth and a joy to write on. I had a concern for long drying times for my fountain pen, causing some smudging as one writes from page to page in meetings. I haven't had any problems and my pen lays a decently wet line (Padrino Contour M nib with PrivateReserve Velvet Black ink). My only criticism is I should have gone with a spiral bound. This doesn't lay completly flat so you have to write up hill as you go towards the center crease when writing on the left hand page of the notebook, not a problem on the right hand page. This is probably not as big a deal in the larger size notebook. I'll probaly repurpose this notebook as a scotch journal and get the larger size notebook for work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Search has Ended Over the past 4 months i have hunted for the perfect notebooks, going so far as to bind my own because i just couldn't find what i wanted. But that search ended with the Clairefontaine Clothbound notebook. They are great (I ordered three, two elastic, one not). My main pen in a Lamy Accent with a fine nib and Noodler's heart of darkness ink. Super Smooth combination! The ink dries faster than I would have expected. the thinkness of the covers is perfect, not to thin not to think. Shortly after ordering my notebooks (a few hours) I sent Brian an email asking him to adjust the address of the order, I had made a mistake when typing it. I was a bit dismayed at not receiving a confirmation response from Brian concerning the change in address. But my package arrived (at the adjusted address) with a hand written note complete with wax seal. Best service ever, hands down.
