Clairefontaine Basics
Clairefontaine Basic Clothbound Notebook - Black, Lined (5.83 x 8.27) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 61.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clariefontain 5.875 x 8.25 As mentioned in my review for larger notebook, I really like the quality of the paper for use with the fountain pens. The pens seem to glide across rather that scratch or grab at the paper. I really like this size as a personal journal, writing down stories that I hope someday my grandchildren will be interested in reading. I am using the dip fountain pen with a medium to fine nib and experimenting with the various inks I get with the Ink Drop Program (a different color for each story). So far have not found any inks that don?t work well with this paper and I really don?t expect to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Far from basic. This is Clairefontaine paper at a bargain price. I discovered these notebooks at Goulet after a diligent search to find a journal refill that was a specific odd size for a well-worn leather cover. These notebooks are that exact size and at a great price. (I remove the elastic on the ones I use with covers and add them back later when they are archived). Very study and lighter weight to carry around than the hardcover journals like Moleskine. The paper, amazing. I believe that Clairfontaine and Rhodia are the same paper in different weights. This one I believe is 90 lb. I have found that medium and larger nibs appeal to me more on this paper. So far the Diamine and Noodler inks work great (Majestic blue doesn't smear as bad as everyone seems to indicate).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good, affordable, no nonsense I like this notebook a lot. The cardstock cover is sturdy (I carry this daily in my backpack and am now 3/4 of the way finished and it's still holding up fine), and I like that it's a more disposable material than the Moleskine/Rhodia Webbie/Quo Vadis out there. Having a paper cover just seems like it makes a smaller environmental footprint. The paper is thick and sturdy. $9 is a great price, and it means that you are paying for the paper and not a fancy cover. The brown craft cover has a nice classic look with an embossed Clairefontaine logo that doesn't draw too much attention.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Search has Ended Over the past 4 months i have hunted for the perfect notebooks, going so far as to bind my own because i just couldn't find what i wanted. But that search ended with the Clairefontaine Clothbound notebook. They are great (I ordered three, two elastic, one not). My main pen in a Lamy Accent with a fine nib and Noodler's heart of darkness ink. Super Smooth combination! The ink dries faster than I would have expected. the thinkness of the covers is perfect, not to thin not to think. Shortly after ordering my notebooks (a few hours) I sent Brian an email asking him to adjust the address of the order, I had made a mistake when typing it. I was a bit dismayed at not receiving a confirmation response from Brian concerning the change in address. But my package arrived (at the adjusted address) with a hand written note complete with wax seal. Best service ever, hands down.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great, but not college ruled This notebook is great for fountain pen use. No feathering, bleed-through, and the like. But, I was disappointed to find that the lines were slightly larger than college ruled. They aren't exactly wide ruled either, but something in between the two. Still a great notebook though!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wish it had a place mark, better than Moleskine I purchased this notebook as a candidate replacement for the Moleskine lined notebooks I use for journaling. This product is less expensive and better than comparable Moleskine notebooks. The elastic band does not wear out as quickly, and the finish of the paper is better. I wish it had a cloth bookmark like the Moleskine and other similar notebooks, and I didn't realize I would miss the pockets in the back cover. Also, it would be nice if it came in an ivory paper color instead of the simple white.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I hate this paper At first I thought the problem was my pens or inks. I would be getting good writing at the head of the page and then as I moved down the page the writing became more and more "skippy", and especially on the left hand side. Looking at the "rave reviews" this paper has gotten under these reviews, maybe I have a defective notebook. But there are places on the pages of this notebook where I can barely write anything. At this point, until I get more information on this problem, I am going to avoid Clairefontaine notebooks and look with suspicion on Clairefontaine paper in general.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this paper This paper is my favorite among all the journals I have used so far Rhodia, Moleskine, Leuchtturm 1917. I use a lot of broad nib with heavy flow fountain pens and this paper has performed with no feathering, bleed through and very little ghosting. I like the bright white color as well. The binding is not up to the same standards as the journals I mentioned above and I have some lingering questions regarding durability. But at this price point I have been pleasantly surprised.
