A note from the founders, Linnea and Ward:

We started experimenting with making our own sealing wax in the early 1990s. We’ve tested it on our personal correspondence since then, and we started selling it to the public in 2003. We make the wax sticks ourselves in our atelier. We mix small batches and pour the wax into special molds from which individual sticks are removed and trimmed. Our wax comes in a rainbow of colors, and is sized for convenience of use.

We consulted with noted herbalist Jeanne Rose to find the right essential oils to scent our wax; which include cassia, nutmeg, clove bud, litsea cubeba, lavender, vetiver, and pine. Our wax sticks bear a calligraphic rendering (done by Ward) of our business name (Atelier Gargoyle), along with the medieval alchemical symbols for “wax” and “spirit or essence”.

Atelier Gargoyle Flexible Sealing Wax - Seaglass Green (1-Stick) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful color I love this sealing wax! The color is lovely. The first time I used it I did get some black soot streaks. But I fixed that by just heating the stick in the blue part of the butane flame, not the yellow. (The blue part of the flame is the hottest and will melt the wax the cleanest.) And I love the scent of the Atelier Gargoyle wax. I do not find it takes any extra time to melt the wax, especially since I hold it in the hottest part of the flame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful I like to seal my letters and find Atelier Gargoyle Sealing Wax to the job well. Melts quickly, and takes an impression well. The wax stays true to color when you melt it, and offers a soft scent during the process. The wax comes in a variety of colors and I am slowly collecting them all. So far, I have found the product to be very consistent across the board and well worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seaglass Green I have several colors of AG sealing wax, and I love them all. This one is no exception. I use a butane torch, and I didn't get any soot in my wax. It's a very pretty light green. Once I used it to make a seal, I liked the color more than I thought I would, even.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cool color, very flexible/durable material, ruined by sootiness The color is appealing, aptly-named, and pretty much matches the Goulet picture; it is, however, slightly translucent, so if using it with paper that isn't white, you might want to think about how the base color will show through. But the bigger problem is that if you melt the wax using most flame sources, it gets sooty. Regular lighters actually turn the end of the stick black, and even matches will leave black specks in the wax. Because it's a brighter, translucent color, this makes the end result look grimy. Supposedly a butane torch lighter would avoid this problem, but so would getting a darker/more intensely colored stealing wax. The material is flexible and durable, kind of like glue-gun glue, but a little stronger. I have no doubt it could make it through the mail intact. But once it's on the paper you'll have to rip the envelope open; the seal is not going to pop off clean like a more brittle sealing wax might. If you already have the torch lighter and you like this color, go for it. Otherwise it's kind of a waste.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Color but a Job to melt I am such a huge fan of sealing wax and my favorite color is aquamarine. I decided to get a stick of this particular sealing wax, as it is not a normal color. Immediately, I noticed the scent but could not place what exactly it was. I got some hints of lavender... So when it was time to seal an envelope, I took a lighter to the wax stick as usual. Sadly, I noticed that this particular wax takes significantly longer to melt than other brands [Goulet] carries. I do NOT recommend using a cigarette lighter, as you will burn your thumb trying to melt the wax. As another reviewer said, because of the lighter color, you will get some blackening. This is normal and can be somewhat rectified when you melt the desired amount you want and then stir up the pool you formed with the melted end. Doing this 1) helps hide the black specks and 2) establishes a clean circle (or square) ready for the brass seal to be placed on the 'pool'. Overall, the product looks great when completed and the mild scent is pleasant and unexpected. The wax stick is substantial in size so you will get more impressions than you think with this. The downside is the slow melt time but once you have enough to make your seal, I am sure you will be happy with it! 3 stars out of 5.
