A note from the founders, Linnea and Ward:

We started experimenting with making our own sealing wax in the early 1990s. We’ve tested it on our personal correspondence since then, and we started selling it to the public in 2003. We make the wax sticks ourselves in our atelier. We mix small batches and pour the wax into special molds from which individual sticks are removed and trimmed. Our wax comes in a rainbow of colors, and is sized for convenience of use.

We consulted with noted herbalist Jeanne Rose to find the right essential oils to scent our wax; which include cassia, nutmeg, clove bud, litsea cubeba, lavender, vetiver, and pine. Our wax sticks bear a calligraphic rendering (done by Ward) of our business name (Atelier Gargoyle), along with the medieval alchemical symbols for “wax” and “spirit or essence”.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally a supple sealing wax in black! I've been on the hunt for a good supple sealing wax in a black color for more than a year. My gold standard for sealing wax is Waterston's "Scottish" sealing wax (sometimes called "traditional" or "king's wax"). The black color in particular is absolutely perfect. It dries with a high gloss, and takes a wonderfully crisp impression of even a fairly detailed seal. The problem, of course, is that it's brittle as all get-out. Being a "traditional" wax, it was never formulated with the modern mailing system in mind. Oh, I still use it for hand-delivered notes and the like. But there's basically no way to get it through the mail system intact. Enter modern, "supple" sealing waxes. I've been very pleased with the various colors of J. Herbin's supple sealing wax. They melt well, take a fairly crisp impression, and I've had fairly good luck with my seals surviving (mostly) intact through the USPS system (your mileage may vary). The only downside is that J. Herbin doesn't make a black sealing wax. Le sigh. I did try to hunt down a black supple sealing wax through other channels, of course. The closest I came was a no-name wax that I found on Amazon that melted poorly, took a very "blobby" impression, and would actually catch fire relatively easily and burn my paper. No bueno! When I heard that my pals at the Goulet Pen Co. would be carrying a wide range of Atelier Gargoyle's sealing waxes -- including "Dead Black" -- I was very excited. I missed out on the first batch, but immediately snapped up four sticks when it was back in stock. I have to say that my first impressions are very good. The wax melts pretty well. I would say that it's melting point is somewhere just a bit higher than the J. Herbin supple waxes, and it dries a little more quickly. So sometimes I have to apply flame to it a little longer (and go back over it with a flame for longer before placing my seal) than I would with the J. Herbin waxes. But so far that's not been anything but a (very) minor inconvenience. In terms of seal impression, I'd say it takes a pretty good seal. It's nowhere near as crisp as the traditional, brittle wax -- but I wasn't expecting that. I would say it's not quite as crisp as J. Herbin, but not bad. Atelier Gargoyle waxes are scented, and this one has a clove scent. It's much more potent when you first take it out of the package than anything else. A small amount of wax for a seal on a piece of paper has only a faint scent. I'm not overly fond of scented anything, but this isn't obnoxious. Overall, I'd say this is about the best sealing wax that you're going to find that is both black and supple. I haven't mailed it yet, but I expect it to perform similarly to the J. Herbin wax -- maybe even a little better (it seems more "rubbery" when dry, if only by a slight margin).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great wax. Smells of licorice. I only recently got into making wax seals for my letters. I really enjoy Atelier waxes. I now have about 10 different colors of the gargoyle line and I really enjoy mixing them. These sticks are on par with J. Herbin waxes but offer a somewhat pleasant scent with each one. I have used my Turquoise stick for about 12 seals so far and have only used about 1/6th of the stick so it's a pretty good value. I recommend all of the flexible sealing waxes offered by GPC.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice! This is really nice wax. I bought the black for something a bit different. It's not my favorite shade, but I will use it occasionally. It's definitely a very nice, deep black, so if that's what you're looking for, this is it!
