A note from the founders, Linnea and Ward:

We started experimenting with making our own sealing wax in the early 1990s. We’ve tested it on our personal correspondence since then, and we started selling it to the public in 2003. We make the wax sticks ourselves in our atelier. We mix small batches and pour the wax into special molds from which individual sticks are removed and trimmed. Our wax comes in a rainbow of colors, and is sized for convenience of use.

We consulted with noted herbalist Jeanne Rose to find the right essential oils to scent our wax; which include cassia, nutmeg, clove bud, litsea cubeba, lavender, vetiver, and pine. Our wax sticks bear a calligraphic rendering (done by Ward) of our business name (Atelier Gargoyle), along with the medieval alchemical symbols for “wax” and “spirit or essence”.

Atelier Gargoyle Flexible Sealing Wax - Copper (1-Stick) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stick looks great, seals are very nice too. Impressive - would make a great gift! The stick itself looks great. As you can see from my photos, the level of detail and shine in the stick itself make it a work of art! The seal itself also looks lovely, with lots of detail and subtle colour variation. I noticed the wax bubbled slightly at the edges, and the bubbles look a little odd. Perhaps this is my lack of experience though. I also get bubbles in my J Herbin flexible wax (burgundy colour). Compared to the J Herbin wax, this wax is slower to melt, so it takes longer to get a seal. The wax seems a little thicker on the paper, and doesn't fill itself in after I've taken the stamp away, like the Herbin. Very impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Atelier Gargoyle - YES! I absolutely love this sealing wax! This time around, I ordered Copper, Gold, Silver, and Espresso. The quality of the wax is superb. The "raw" stick may look a little flat if you're buying for first time, but just melt that first seal and you'll see the true beauty come out. The sticks are large and give a lot of seals for the buck. It is very economical to use, the cost is really not pricey at all. Plus, it holds up really well in the mails. The scents of the wax are truly wonderful. Earthy and warm. When I opened the package, I was greeted with intoxicating earth tones, and it felt like I could instantly be transported into either Christmas Eve, or a Midsummer's night. The scents are luscious without being perfume-ish or overpowering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, tough wax This has a strong, cinnamon smell oddly enough. It seemed to take a little longer to melt down than other waxes I have used and once it is on there it does not come off. I put it on a hand-delivered card and the recipient had to use a penknife to slice through it as it would not tear on its own. I would think it would stand up in the postal system with no issue. I tend to make smaller seals, using less wax, and I noticed that it was somewhat transparent if you don't use enough of it. The shimmer is beautiful, and is a gorgeous copper color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great colour, Odd gassing when melting I love the colour, or rather the metallic colours, visible when this wax is melted. It shows off the copper colour nicely. However, I did notice that the wax would bubble when it dropped from the stick to the paper, suggesting that it is off-gassing when it touches the paper. This leaves occasional bubbles when the wax solidifies. (Two notes to this, I am used to a different supple wax, which does not do this and also, I use a butane lighter to melt my wax, which may be too hot.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The color is fantastic, very durable. I'm not certain I should be reviewing this - it was my first attempt at a wax seal. I will say it's great for modern use since it's not a brittle seal. It's very strong, the color is gorgeous. It was hard to use, but that's coming from an absolute beginner so take it with a grain of salt. I definitely recommend watching Brian's video. If I hadn't I would have totally messed this up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the sheen I am a fan of sealing waxes that have a shimmer to them. This one does not disappoint! It is a beautiful copper color, has a nice subtle sheen and it is flexible. It also melts really nicely. I have a little melting pot so I can't say how it works with a flame held to it. I hope to try mor colors in the near future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Wax The scent travels well enough, which was the primary draw for me. The color variety with this brand is quite excellent (copper was the first color I purchased, but I have purchased several more in the meantime). The seal is very good--durable. I highly recommend this brand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Sealing Wax I have compared this wax with the J. Herbin, and while both work fine I believe I like the Atelier waxes better. The melting point on these waxes seems to be lower and I get a cleaner impression from both of my seals.
