Rohrer & Klingner - Salix (iron gall) (50ml) is rated 4.7353 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great waterproof colour. This ink flows well in my Pilot Vanishing Point Medium and Fine nibs, though after a while, it does appear paler. The flow can be restored temporarily by removing the nib unit from the barrel, holding nib up, and twisting the converter down a little (toward you - counterclockwise), till a tiny drop of ink appears just at the mouth of the intake hole. This forces ink through the feed. With a dip nib, this ink is very versatile. Can be almost black, or a very pale, dusty, faded denim colour. Very sensual and sedate at the same time. Great for formal occasions. No redness to it. A true blue. Waterproof!. Very handy!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Penful of Dust Next to "shaded", my favourite quality in an ink is "dusty", and R&K Salix is a wonderfully dusty blue-black, heavy on the blue. It calls to mind some of the dustier J. Herbin inks such as Bleu Nuit. It isn't completely waterproof ? some of the ink will wash from the paper ? but is sufficiently water-resistant that it's still completely legible after a dousing. The colour is conservative enough to make it an ideal ink for office use and correspondence, while still being visually interesting and out of the ordinary. "Salix", in case you were wondering (I am always wondering about such things), is the Latin word for "willow", and is related to "salicylic acid", aka aspirin, which used to be derived from willow trees. I don't know why the ink is named after the tree, but life should have some mystery to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good blue/black Pretty well behaved blue-black. Dries a bit too black for what I need, but very controlled and stays put on the page without much feathering. Good performance even on "lowest bidder" copy paper. To the reviewer from New Brunswick, while I'm not sure if growths from willow trees have been used to make Iron-Gall ink, galls (growths on trees caused by insects or other things) usually from oaks have been used to make the ink. Combination of iron (Fe2+) and gallic acid (and related compounds) went into the ink. So, in a way, it makes sense to name it for a tree.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite Blue This Iron-Gall stays bluer than the Diamine Registar's Ink (that I also have and love) but has the same properties (water proof, no feathering or bleeding). Is a bit dry so use a wet pen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My dedicated color for school I use this ink for all my schoolwork - notes and homework. It dries fast, shades wonderfully, and works on pretty much every paper I throw at it. :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic, works in every pen type. Very nice waterproof blue/black. This is now one of my favorites. I like the variation in color so I load this up in a Noodler's Ahab for the flex action. This is my favorite ink through a dip pen. It works perfectly off a Gillott's 303 and Hunt 22 nib. If you want a good dark blue iron gall, this is one of the best. It holds more blue than other iron galls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Ink Wonderful vibrant blue when wet, and a stormy blue-grey dried. Refuses to bleed or feather on any paper I've tried. I was worried after hearing about how iron gall inks could clog a pen, so when I (inadvertently) let this ink sit in my Noodler's Konrad for about a month and have it start up immediately, I was very impressed. I highly recommend this ink.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Salix a good choice I ordered Salix in my search for a substitute for my current daily writer ink for business and formal use, Montblanc Midnight Blue iron gall formula, now discontinued. Salix is also an IG ink, but retains more of a blue hue when dry than many other IG inks. Shading is excellent. It is a bit dry, as many others have noted in various reviews, but flows well in the fairly wet pen that I'm using. I got lucky and found more of my beloved Montblanc Midnight Blue, but when it runs out Salix would be a good alternate.
