Leuchtturm1917 Master Notebook - Black, Lined (8.86 x 12.40) is rated

Love the large size notebook for meeting notes. Looks professional and great quality. The page numbers are helpful for record keeping too. Paper quality is great for the fountain pens/inks I use ... usually Safari Black Al-Star, fine nib with Noodler's Zhivago, Italix Churchman's Proscriptor with a fine italic nib and Noodler's Black or Iroshizuku Kon Peki. Paper doesn't bleed or feather. With the italic nib and black ink you can see just a very little bit of ghosting sometimes, but never enough where you can't use both sides of the sheet. Overall a great notebook.

Many nice features but let down by the paper
I bought the A4 size at the beautiful shop Landolf-Arbenz in Zurich. The price was vastly greater than at Goulet. For the extreme price I was expecting fountain pen perfection. I was amazed that the pages can not be used on the second side due to so much bleed. I switched to one of my fine nibs from my usual medium which made the flip side just usable. The paper is inferior to Rhodia 90g cream. I guess that fountain pens need the higher china clay smooth paper to completely avoid bleed. I bought 2 Leuchtturm 1917s and am using them but as single sided notebooks. They do look great and have features but this was a one time only purchase for me.

Fantastic for research and reference
I bought this notebook mostly for three reasons. First, standard size sheets of paper can be taped in without the edges hanging out because it's so large. Second, the numbered pages and index are perfect for finding information easily. Since I use these notebooks for research that I need to reference back to often this is an ideal feature. Third, it lays open flat making writing very, very comfortable. When I've filled it up, you can be sure I'll use the sticky tags they included in the back. Such great design.

Best feature set, but not the most Fountain Pen friendly
I use the Leuchtturm1917 Master notebooks for writing manuscripts. Really, I don't think there's any other product out there that compares. The double ribbon bookmark, table of contents, page headers & footers, the pocket in the back, the labels... you'd think that this would be the hands-down favorite of fountain pen users. And yet, it can't be. The 100g paper that the mighty Master uses is better than what's in the smaller Leuchtturm offerings, true. But it's still an also-ran compared to the better quality Clairefontaine paper that Rhodia uses in their smaller webnotebooks. In my own tests, some of my favorite pens can't be reasonably used in this notebook. I've got a Jinhao 159 with a Goulet EF nib in it, which is actually a hair broader and wetter than the Pilot F. It turns out it's too wet; writing with that pen in this book bleeds through the page a little here and there (using Hero blue-black ink). Oddly, another Jinhao pen with the larger Goulet "F" nib did not bleed much at all when using Hero Blue ink. Still not sure if the difference is the nib, the ink, or some combination of the two. My TWSBI "F" with Iroshizuku yama-budo also bleeds on this paper. But a Goulet "M" nib with Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses does not. While these notebooks are pretty amazing, this is not the place for a fountain pen show & tell. The paper can't deal. Find a pen, nib, and ink combo that works well within its limits and you will be rewarded for the compromise. If Leuchtturm1917 could make this same product but with a paper equal in quality to that of Rhodia, it would be game over for Rhodia in my eyes. The included labels are a nice touch, but the quality and sizing is perhaps a bit shabby. The binding labels can be particularly hard to line up, and would be much easier to apply if they were scaled down a touch. On the flip side, the cover labels could use scaling up. The quality of the adhesive leaves some room for doubt. It would be a nice touch if the cover & binding were embossed in a way that served as a guide for label placement.

Well. Suffice it to say that I was VERY popular!
This was a gift and so went over as among the best birthdays ever. So. Don't hesitate. Great paper, great quality, great service.
