A Superb Nib Out of the Box March 28, 2013
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from Deep Creek, Utah
I really like the medium nib. It is a superb nib right out of the box–silky smooth with just a little feedback to help keep the nib under control. I am becoming a huge fan of Pilot nibs. It is hard to beat a Pilot nib. The medium nib writes more like a western fine. There is a considerable difference between the medium and broad. I probably prefer the broad nib for most use, but sometimes you need something a little finer. The medium nib serves that purpose quite readily. I will probably use the fine nib for limited purposes, such as annotating notes and papers

One of a Kind December 10, 2012
Reviewer: James McConnel from Fairfax, VA United States
I have three of the Pilot Custom 823s: Clear, Black, and Amber, all in medium nib.

Out of the box the nibs perform smooth as silk, no tweaking or customization required.  The ink capacity is generous, although I tend not to fill mine up completely because I like rotating through my ink colors and you can write for a very long time on a full Custom 823...

I love the size of the pen. It is large enough that posting is unnecessary; in fact, posted you may find the pen too heavy.

Materials and construction are excellent. The nib alone would be a reason to purchase this pen. Some may feel this pen is a bit pricey. I consider it a bargain at this price compared with other pens whose nibs approach the quality of this nib.

I acquired my Amber Pilot Custom 823 from Goulet pens with the same level of service I've grown to love and respect. I just wish Goulet could work some magic and acquire some of the Pilot Custom 823s in Clear again.

Great Value November 2, 2012

Excellent pen for the money..very smooth and holds a lot of ink..I like the large size for my hands. You could spend 2x as much and not do better.

A high-end pen at a reasonable price October 24, 2012
Reviewer: Donna from Florida
This is an all-around excellent and beautiful pen with the added bonus of a fun and interesting filling system. It's solid, with the precision craftsmanship and performance you'd expect from Pilot. The price does seem high if you have not seen and used the pen, but when you have it in your hand, you'll understand. We're definitely NOT talking about the typical cheesy-looking demonstrator pen here.

The nib was perfect out of the box, wet but not too wet, and not a hint of scratchiness. Again, that's what I've come to expect from the Custom series.

In the "Fountain Pen Reviews" forum on the Fountain Pen Network, there is a review of the Custom 823 by a user named dizzypen. She includes a video that clearly illustrates the technique for filling the reservoir completely with ink. Very helpful!

My Second 823 September 17, 2012
Reviewer: Wally Welch from Navarre, FL
My first was a Fine nib, this is a Med. nib.  The Pilot nibs run about 1/2 size smaller than German 14K Med. nibs.

Bryan noted my second purchase and was concerned I had some problems.  Like who buys two $290 pens just to change nibs?  That's real customer service!

Unfortunatey I lost my first pen and I liked it so much I replaced it right away.  That testifies how much I like and recommend the Pilot 823.  Yes, the price hurts so I'm not going to lose this one.
