Wonderfull all a round May 1, 2012
Reviewer: Paul Swanson from Jacksonville, FL United States
I ordered the J. Herbin Large Glass Dip Pen - Violet and the Rohrer & Klingner Glass Dip Pen - Blue/Gold at the same time yet I found that once both pens were unwrapped and tested I kept coming back to this one. The Glass tip is super fine just not sanded. So you'll need to smooth it out yourself with a grade 400 peice of sandpaper. Other than that tiny little meh the pen is perfect.

A bit tough to get used to, but a great experience January 13, 2012
Reviewer: Michael from Tulsa, OK United States
I got this pen, as well as J. Herbin's Vert RŽsŽda, several months ago and immediately regretted spending the money on it. It was scratchy, required constant dipping to maintain a consistent line, and would gush like crazy every few dips.

I experimented and learned, and today I can say I'm glad I bought it, but I still wouldn't want to write for hours with it.

Things to consider:

It's very thin, too thin for comfort (for me).

The nib will probably require some sanding for the scratchiness.

Use GOOD paper. Cheap notebook paper will cause gushing and inconstancy.

Use thicker ink. J. Herbins Vert RŽsŽda is a very "wet" ink. That didn't help the gushing problem.

Buy it knowing those things and you'll be a lot happier with the pen.

Nice, but handle-colors are not colored glass. January 3, 2012
Reviewer: Anonymous Person
The coloration (at least on the twist-style glass pen) appears to be a dipped, lacquer-type coating that is not very durable when exposed to solvents.

If you get ammonia on the handle, the color will chip and peel off.  That wasn't an issue for me, as I liked the look of the all-clear pen anyway.

Ammonia seems to loosen the lacquer more than even Acetone.  Since there are a number of small surface-imperfections amongst the twists, you'll either have to use a dental pick or very-gently brush out the last few color flecks with a soft-bristle metal brush (I used a soft, brass brush and a lot of caution.)

So if the color is important to you, keep any aggressive solvents (even ammonia) away from these pens.  I love this pen, no matter what the color.  Caveat emptor!

More pleasurable to use on 'scratchy' papers December 25, 2011
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from Theory
I try to use my 100% cotton stationery as much as I can justify.  After smoothing the tip of this glass dip-pen (as directed by one of Brian's vids), this pen wrote more smoothly on that paper than any of my pens, fountain or not.

To get the alleged 'two lines of writing before re-dipping', you have to either wait for the ink to flow -or- just rotate the pen in your fingers every few words.

But that kind of 'effort' with a dip-pen is negligible.  If you're looking for a novelty, 'letter-writing' pen, these glass dip-pens are a great option!

Beautiful pen...gets a lot of compliments December 20, 2011
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from Lamar, MO United States
This pen was an impulse buy for my office desk.  It's a bit of fun novelty to write letters with it (you can write with it faster than you'd think.)

Great pen!
